Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Sometimes doing sports or reaching the ideal weight may not be enough for a flat and trouble-free stomach that men and women of all ages would like to have. Abdominoplasty will be the most effective way to remove the deformation, sagging and excess skin in the abdominal region.

Abdominoplasty is a plastic surgery operation in which excess fat and sagging skin are removed from the front of the abdomen and weak abdominal muscles are tightened by stretching. Abdominal surgeries are performed due to rapid and frequent weight gain and loss, which is a problem especially for women, as well as lubrication, sagging and cracks in the abdominal region with old age or after pregnancy.

Why Does Your Abdomen Get Fat and Sagging?

Weight gain is not always seen as the same amount of fat in all parts of the body. The body usually stores most of the adipose tissue in the abdomen and waist regions. For this reason, especially in women, the most important complaints are related to sagging and lubricated abdominal areas. Loosening, sagging and cracks in the abdomen may also occur in people who have lost excess weight due to diets or obesity surgery.

In the lubricated abdomen, tears occur in the tissues between the abdominal muscles. Due to these tears, the muscles that keep the abdomen flat begin to separate from each other. With the pressure exerted by the internal organs, the abdominal region takes a convex shape outward, loosening, sagging and cracks occur in the decare due to the own weight of the fat tissue. It is also often impossible to eliminate ruptures in the abdominal muscles and deformations of the abdominal skin with exercise and diet.

How is Abdominoplasty Performed?

In tummy tuck surgery, a transverse incision is usually made in the lowest part of the abdomen (this incision is low enough to be hidden under a swimsuit) and another incision is made around the belly button.

In mini tummy tuck surgery, these incisions are slightly shorter. In fact, sometimes an incision may not be made around the belly button.

After these incisions are made, the skin is separated from the muscles from the groin to the lower chest. The resulting abdominal muscles are strengthened by the stretching method, and if there is weakness, it is repaired. The skin is then stretched and stitched into place. Excess skin is cut and removed. Stitches are closed with dressing.

Who Can Have Abdominoplasty?

A full tummy tuck is usually applied to people who have given birth or gained and lost excess weight. If there is excess skin above the navel of the patient and if there is a layer under the navel that he can hold with his hand when sitting, he is a suitable patient candidate for a full tummy tuck. A mini tummy tuck is performed if the excess skin and fat are only collected under the belly button.

Pre-Surgery Considerations

Before the operation, the patient should inform the surgeon and anesthesiologist who will perform the aesthetic operation, all the details about the drugs used and the general health status. One week before the operation, the use of blood thinners, herbal teas, fish oils should be stopped, and special herbal cure applications should not be made. As in all operations, it is recommended to stop smoking and alcohol consumption at least one week before the tummy tuck operation. This is very important for the healing process to go faster.

Postoperative Considerations and Recovery Process

The patient is dressed in an abdominal corset after the surgery. This corset should be used for at least 3 weeks. One week after the operation, the patient can return to his daily life. It is recommended not to lift heavy objects for the first 4-6 weeks. After 3 weeks, sports can be started except for abdominal movements. After 6 weeks, all sports activities are free.

Is Tummy Tuck A Painful Operation?

Abdominoplasty operations are generally not very painful procedures. Thanks to the anesthetics used during the operation, the patient does not feel pain after the operation. The next day, a slight pain sensation occurs, but these pains can be relieved with mild painkillers.

How Long Does Abdominoplasty Take?

A full tummy tuck takes about 2-5 hours, and a partial tummy tuck takes about 1-3 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Abdominal stretching prices vary according to the degree of sagging and excess fat in the abdomen, whether liposuction will be performed with it, the age and medical condition of the patient.

Abdominoplasty does not prevent the pregnancy process anatomically in any way. The person who has the surgery can easily become pregnant, the abdominal wall adapts to pregnancy and expands. However, it is not recommended to get pregnant especially in the early period after tummy tuck surgeries, because the weight to be gained during pregnancy and changes in the abdominal wall cause the advantages of the surgery to disappear. The abdominal wall may become loose, the weight gained negatively affects the result.

Excess skin and fat collected in the body after birth sometimes do not return to their pre-pregnancy form despite the diet and various exercises. In such cases, sagging in the belly and abdomen can be removed by surgery at the earliest 1 year after birth.

Patients are advised to wait at least two weeks before having sexual intercourse after tummy tuck surgery.

Abdominoplasty is a procedure that is usually performed together with fat removal. In fact, for the purpose of providing abdominal aesthetics, first removing the excess fat in the area, then strengthening the abdominal muscles and completing the tummy tuck is a much more effective method for many patients. However, depending on the scope of liposuction operations to be performed on other parts of the body, it may be recommended by the doctor to complete the liposuction operation first and then perform the tummy tuck operation in the future.

The main factor that the doctor considers while determining and shaping the scope of the operation is the general health status of the patient and the amount of fat that is planned to be removed from the body.

Especially after giving birth, loosening of the abdomen, cracks and sagging may occur in women. In tummy tuck surgeries, most of the cracks, especially under the navel, are removed, but some of them may remain in some patients. But even if there are stretch marks, it is less noticeable because the patient has a flat stomach after the surgery.

Mini tummy tuck surgery is an operation that can be preferred for people who have loose skin but are not suitable for a full tummy tuck and who do not have excess weight in the abdomen. It is especially applied to people who have given birth and have excess fat or subcutaneous tissue gathered under their navel.

In mini tummy tuck surgery, excess fat is removed from the abdomen and waist area and the excess tissue under the belly is removed and stretching is performed. No procedure is applied to the area above the navel.

All aesthetic surgeries should be performed by plastic surgeons. For this reason, plastic surgery specialists who have experience in this field should be consulted for tummy tuck surgeries.

After abdominal surgeries, a scar that can be hidden inside the underwear may remain. This scar usually decreases over time and does not bother patients.

Abdominoplasty can be performed under general anesthesia or regional anesthesia with a combination of spinal-epidural anesthesia. Anesthesia method is chosen considering the patient's age, health status and personal wishes. Regardless of the anesthesia method, the main purpose is the safety of the surgery and the comfort of the patient.

In cases where there is no crack in the abdominal skin and sagging is minimal, only liposuction may be sufficient. Usually, liposuction is sufficient after the first pregnancies with little weight gain. But after second and third pregnancies, multiple pregnancies or pregnancies with excess weight, applying liposuction only causes skin sagging.
